Language learning resource

February 11, 2009

This site is full of games and resources – that are actually really fun!

www.iknow.co.jp.

For example the brain speed game.

I found it on this via this blog which gave some great practical advice about learning Japanese.  Including immersing yourself in it, via podcasts, films, music etc.

If you have access to spotify – then search against terms like: ame, boku, watashi, sakura and you’ll find a whole host of Japanese songs you can listen to for free.  I’m also a big fan of the Lost in Translation soundtrack, although there isn’t much Japanese on it!

Japanese Film in London

January 30, 2009

I’ve just spotted that there is a new season of Japanese film coming up at the ICA called Reality Fiction: Japanese Film inspired by real events.

“looks at how Japanese film-makers have been influenced by actual events, some of which have shaped the nation’s recent history. You don’t have to know the details of the true stories behind the six films here to appreciate their dramatic potency or the film-maker’s artistic achievements. This season is produced and organised by the Japan Foundation with advice from Jasper Sharp”.

Keep your eye on the ICA listings, they are often playing Japanese films.  Tonight I’m going to see Tokyo Sonata, which I am very much looking forward to.

Tickets are £8/ £7 concessions and £6 for ICA members.

Welcome (all Japanaholics living in London)

January 28, 2009

Are you are Japan addict?  Do you live in London?  I’m going to tell you how to get your fix.

I, like you, am a self-confessed Japanaholic.  Already out of the shoji-screen closet, I have no shame in admitting that I stalk Japanese culture in London and I know I am not alone in my weird fixation.

Despite being a fairly normal person, I managed to get ‘infected’ when I lived and taught in Osaka, Japan about 4 years ago.  I also had the fairly unique insight of living with my Japanese ex-boyfriend’s family.  So since returning to the UK, after a stint in Spain, I have rekindled my love for the Japanese culture.

I’ve steadily been learning about where and when I can get my Japan ‘fixes’ and think its more than likely that there are lots more people living in London like me – equally intrigued and obsessed with all things Japanese.

So if I haven’t scared you off, I hope you find this blog a useful resource for learning about Japan related events in London, Japanese culture, learning Japanese language and making Japanese friends (and scaring your friends with how obsessed you are becoming……).

If I get enough people interested I might consider doing a newsletter about up-coming events.  If you are interested email me at: hayley.stopford@gmail.com.
